Starfield Melee Build 2026: Ronin Katana Build Guide
TL;DR: The Melee Ronin closes the gap unseen and deletes enemies with one power attack. Start as Ronin, build Dueling + Stealth into Martial Arts and Concealment, and carry the Syndicate Enforcer Katana early, then a Va’ruun Painblade late.
Why play the Melee Ronin build
Melee in Starfield is underrated. Dueling reduces damage taken while wielding a melee weapon, and Concealment boosts sneak attacks, ranged or melee.
It is the most fun stealth alternative to the Stealth Sniper. No ammo, no reloads, and boost packs let you cross a room instantly.
Best background & traits
| Pick | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Background | Ronin (Dueling, Stealth, Scavenging) | Starts both core skills of the build |
| Trait | Terra Firma | More health and oxygen on planets, where most melee fights happen |
| Trait | Introvert | More oxygen when solo. Pairs with Isolation |
Skill order, level by level
Every skill tree has four tiers: Tier 2 needs 4 points spent in that tree, Tier 3 needs 8 and Tier 4 needs 12. Ranks 2–4 of a skill also need that skill’s challenge completed first, so treat these as phases rather than exact levels. Plan it in our Skill Planner.
| Phase | Skills | Tree | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Levels 1–8 | Dueling, Stealth, Fitness, Wellness, Boost Pack Training | Combat / Physical / Tech | Oxygen for attacks, health, and mobility |
| Levels 8–16 | Gymnastics, Pain Tolerance, Isolation, more Dueling and Stealth ranks | Physical / Social | Combat slide, damage reduction, solo bonus |
| Levels 16–24 | Martial Arts, Energy Weapon Dissipation | Physical (Tier 3) | Melee crits and disarms |
| Levels 24–32 | Concealment | Physical (Tier 4) | The capstone: huge sneak attack damage |
| 32+ | Medicine, Weapon Engineering, Spacesuit Design | Science | Healing and better mods |
Weapons & gear
- Syndicate Enforcer Katana: early and strong. Found in the Syndicate hideout in Ebbside on Neon.
- Wakizashi or Tanto: strong early-to-mid primaries with a wide, reliable arc.
- Va’ruun Painblade: the late-game and NG+ choice for damage and penetration.
- Weapon traits: Rapid (attack speed) and Instigating (double damage on full-health targets).
- Armor: the Mantis set, ideally with oxygen and fall-damage rolls. Use a Skip boost pack for fast gap closing.
How to play it
- Every swing uses oxygen. Fitness ranks matter more than in any other build.
- Power-attack from stealth to one-shot most humans.
- Boost into enemies, strike, then break line of sight to reset.
- Play solo: companions break stealth and turn off Isolation.
NG+ notes
In NG+ add Starborn powers that close distance or protect you. Void Form for stealth and Reactive Shield for defense pair well with melee.
Early, mid and late game checklist
Early game (levels 1–15)
- Start as Ronin and put your first points into Dueling and Stealth.
- Pick up Boost Pack Training so you can close the gap quickly.
- Use the Syndicate Enforcer Katana and pick fights in tight interiors, where melee is strongest.
Mid game (levels 15–35)
- Add Pain Tolerance so you survive the walk in.
- Keep doing Dueling and Stealth challenges to unlock ranks 2–4.
- Keep spending Physical points to unlock the higher tiers for Martial Arts and Concealment.
Late game (35+)
- Rank up Martial Arts and Concealment for one-hit stealth power attacks.
- Switch to a Va’ruun Painblade.
- Carry one ranged weapon for turrets and enemies you cannot reach.
Build at a glance
| Difficulty | Medium to Hard |
|---|---|
| Best for | Aggressive players who want close-range burst damage |
| Core skill trees | Combat (Dueling) and Physical (Stealth, Martial Arts, Concealment) |
| Key gear | Syndicate Enforcer Katana early, Va’ruun Painblade late |
| Strength | Huge burst damage, and no ammo to manage. |
| Weakness | Exposed while crossing open ground toward groups of ranged enemies. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Charging across open ground. Use cover and stealth to close the gap.
- Skipping Boost Pack Training. The boost pack is how you reach enemies quickly.
- Ignoring Pain Tolerance. Melee means you take hits.
- Carrying no ranged backup for turrets and enemies you cannot reach.
How it compares
If melee feels too risky, the Stealth Sniper uses the same Stealth and Concealment skills at range. In NG+, add Starborn powers like Void Form to close distance. See where every build ranks in the build tier list.
