How We Rank Builds
Rankings are based on damage ceiling, survivability across all content, skill investment efficiency, and endgame viability. Builds are tested on max difficulty in the Settled Systems and UC Vanguard NG+ missions.
Damage Ceiling
Peak DPS output against endgame enemies including Starborn and UC patrols
Survivability
Sustain, mitigation, and recovery across all difficulties without save-scumming
Skill Efficiency
How quickly the build comes online and whether early ranks still feel good
NG+ Viability
Does the build scale into New Game Plus and late Unity runs?
⭐ S-Tier — Meta Defining
These builds dominate every content type. If you want maximum effectiveness with minimum friction, start here.

🟢 A-Tier — Excellent Performers
Strong in nearly all content. Slight skill-investment overhead or specific weaknesses keep them from S tier.

| A | Diplomat Gunslinger Persuasion rank 4 opens alternate quest routes. Commerce passive income. Fallback into pistols when needed. | Pistols | Best roleplay build that can still handle combat. Doubles credits from vendors — extremely efficient for legendary gear farming. |
| A | Outpost Engineer Science tree focused. Outpost Management + Research Methods + Commerce. Passive XP and credit generator. | Any (support role) | The “I want to play the game my way” build. Takes time to come online but is extremely satisfying and essentially self-funding. |
🟡 B-Tier — Solid with Caveats
Good builds that require more investment or shine only in specific situations. Still viable for all content.

| B | Melee Juggernaut Martial Arts rank 4 + Fitness + Combat stims. High-risk, high-reward close-quarters destroyer. | Extremely fun but punishing in corridor fights with multiple ranged enemies. Needs spacesuit with high resist. |
| B | Hacker / Tech Specialist Security rank 4 + Robotics + Persuasion. Lockpick everything, turn robots against enemies, non-lethal options. | Underrated utility build. Access to better loot via locked containers makes it financially dominant. |
🟠 C-Tier & Below — Situational
These builds work but require specific playstyles or have fundamental gaps that better builds avoid.

| C | Pure Unarmed Fists only with Martial Arts maxed. Meme build but surprisingly viable early game. | Falls off hard at level 40+ when enemies get ranged capabilities and higher HP pools. |
| C | Explosives Specialist Demolitions + Grenadier. Fun chaos but resource-intensive and ammo-dependent. | Credit cost for grenades makes this unsustainable without Commerce investment. Still a blast (literally). |
| D | Pacifist Run Zero combat kills. Persuasion, stealth, and running. Extremely challenging but technically completable. | Not a recommended build but an incredible challenge. For completionists only. |
📌 Veteran Tip: The tier list is a guideline, not a rulebook. Starfield’s skill system is flexible enough that any build can complete all content. S-tier builds are just more efficient — not more fun. Pick the playstyle that resonates with you and then optimize within that archetype.
Patch 1.16.236 Changes
The Free Lanes update shook up the meta significantly:
- Stealth builds — Concealment skill got a significant detection radius reduction. Stealth Assassin bumped to S tier.
- Particle Beams — 15% damage increase across all particle beam weapons. Particle Sniper builds now lead all DPS charts.
- Ship combat — New Cruise Mode mechanics change the flow of dogfighting. Ship Combat Ace build now leverages this for massive advantage.
- Melee — Minor stamina cost adjustments. Juggernaut builds unaffected but no longer feel as punishing on power attacks.
