Starfield Outpost Build 2026: Science & Crafting Build Guide

B-TIER

Updated October 2026 · Patch 1.16.244 · By Rocky

TL;DR: The Outpost Industrialist turns planets into profit. Start as a Professor, run the Science tree from Geology and Research Methods up to Outpost Engineering, Planetary Habitation and Special Projects, then sell the output.

Why play the Outpost Industrialist build

Outposts produce resources automatically, feeding your crafting and research. That means better weapon and spacesuit mods without buying materials.

It is the best economy build for players who prefer exploring and building to fighting.

Skill order, level by level

Every skill tree has four tiers: Tier 2 needs 4 points spent in that tree, Tier 3 needs 8 and Tier 4 needs 12. Ranks 2–4 of a skill also need that skill’s challenge completed first, so treat these as phases rather than exact levels. Plan it in our Skill Planner.

Outpost setup

  • Pick planets with several resources close together. Our planets guide lists the best.
  • Link outposts with cargo links so materials flow to one main base.
  • Assign crew with outpost skills to boost extraction.
  • Map your base first in the Outpost Planner.

How to play it

  • Start with one iron, aluminum and helium-3 outpost. Most crafting runs on these.
  • Use output for Weapon Engineering and Spacesuit Design mods instead of selling raw materials.
  • Commerce boosts sale prices when you do sell.
  • See our resources guide for where each material spawns.

NG+ notes

Outposts do not carry into NG+, but your skills do, so rebuilding is fast. Many players skip outposts on later cycles and keep the crafting skills.

Early, mid and late game checklist

Early game

  • Put your first points into Geology, Research Methods and Surveying (all Science Tier 1) to find and gather more resources.
  • Build your first outpost where common materials like Iron and Aluminum overlap.
  • Spend 4 Science ranks to unlock Tier 2 skills like Scanning and Botany.

Mid game

  • Take Outpost Engineering (Science Tier 3, after 8 Science ranks) for better outpost modules.
  • Use cargo links to move materials between outposts automatically.
  • Add Outpost Management (Social) once you have unlocked its tier.

Late game

  • Take Planetary Habitation (Science Tier 4) to raise your outpost cap and build on harsher planets.
  • Use Special Projects to craft advanced components.
  • Use what you make for weapon, armor and ship upgrades, or sell the surplus.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Building where the resources you need do not overlap. Scan first and pick planets with several resources.
  • Not linking extractors to storage, so production stops when storage fills.
  • Forgetting power. Extractors stop without enough generator output.
  • Hauling everything by hand. Cargo links move goods between outposts for you.

FAQ

Are outposts worth it in Starfield?
Yes, for crafting and research. They supply materials for mods automatically. For pure credits, other methods are faster.
What skill increases the outpost limit?
Planetary Habitation (Science, Tier 4) raises the outpost cap and allows building on hostile worlds.
Which background is best for outposts?
Professor, which starts with Astrodynamics, Geology and Research Methods.
What is the best first outpost location?
Pick a planet where two or more resources you need overlap, close to a system you visit often. Our planets guide lists strong options.
Why did my outpost stop producing?
Usually storage is full or there is not enough power. Add storage or links, and check your generator output.
