Starfield Pilot Build 2026: Best Ship Captain Build
TL;DR: The Ship Captain wins fights before you land. Start as a Bounty Hunter, max Piloting (rank 4 for Class C ships) and Targeting Control Systems, then pick one weapon system and unlock Starship Design for top-tier modules.
Why play the Ship Captain (Pilot) build
Space combat gets much harder in higher-level systems. A dedicated pilot can take Class C ships, lock onto subsystems and board or disable enemy ships for loot and free ships.
The Tech tree also gives Boost Pack Training and Security, so this build is useful on foot as well.
Best background & traits
| Pick | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Background | Bounty Hunter (Boost Pack Training, Piloting, Targeting Control Systems) | All three are core skills for this build |
| Alt background | Long Hauler (Ballistic Weapon Systems, Piloting, Weight Lifting) | Good if you will run ballistic ship weapons |
| Trait | Spaced (optional) | A buff while in space, with a penalty on planets |
Skill order, level by level
Every skill tree has four tiers: Tier 2 needs 4 points spent in that tree, Tier 3 needs 8 and Tier 4 needs 12. Ranks 2–4 of a skill also need that skill’s challenge completed first, so treat these as phases rather than exact levels. Plan it in our Skill Planner.
| Phase | Skills | Tree | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Levels 1–8 | Piloting, Targeting Control Systems, Ballistic Weapon Systems, Boost Pack Training | Tech | Four Tech points unlock Tier 2 |
| Levels 8–16 | Shield Systems, Engine Systems, Energy Weapon Systems or Payloads, more Piloting ranks | Tech (Tier 2) | Survive longer, out-turn enemies, carry more loot |
| Levels 16–24 | Starship Design, Missile or Particle Beam Weapon Systems, Starship Engineering | Tech (Tier 3) | Better modules and faster repairs |
| Levels 24–32 | Automated Weapon Systems or EM Weapon Systems, Deception | Tech (Tier 4) / Social | Turrets, disabling ships to board them, and cheaper surrender |
| 32+ | Ship Command, Aneutronic Fusion | Social / Science (Tier 4) | More crew and more reactor power |
Ship & gear
- Piloting rank 3 unlocks Class B ships and rank 4 unlocks Class C ships.
- Build around one weapon type so you only need one weapon-system skill. Particle beams are strongest late; ballistics are easiest early.
- Unlock Class B/C modules with Starship Design, then push stats with X-Tech ship optimization.
- Use EM weapons to disable ships, then board them for loot or to capture the ship.
- Design your loadout first in our Ship Builder.
How to play it
- Put targeting on engines first, then weapons. A ship that cannot move or shoot is easy to board.
- Balance reactor power between shields and weapons. Engines only matter in dogfights.
- Keep a light combat ship and a separate cargo hauler.
- Recruit crew with ship skills to boost your ship.
NG+ notes
Your skills carry over, but your ships do not. Your first NG+ goal is credits for a new ship, or the free Starborn Guardian. A maxed pilot makes rebuilding fast.
