Starfield Astrodynamics Skill Guide: Ranks, Challenges & How to Increase Jump Range
Every Astrodynamics rank, its challenge, whether it is worth it, and the ship upgrades that increase grav jump range even more.

Last updated: October 2026 · Patch 1.16.244
Astrodynamics is the Starfield skill that increases your ship’s grav jump range and cuts jump fuel costs. If you keep hitting “out of range” on the starmap, this guide explains every rank, how fast you can max it and the ship upgrades that matter even more.
Astrodynamics at a Glance
- Tree: Science
- Tier: Basic (tier 1), so any character can take it from level 2
- Starting backgrounds that include it: Explorer and Professor
- Best for: explorers, traders, outpost builders and anyone tired of multi-hop jumps
Astrodynamics Ranks and Challenges
| Rank | Effect | Challenge to unlock the next rank |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | +15% grav jump range | Make 5 grav jumps |
| 2 | −15% jump drive fuel cost | Make 15 grav jumps |
| 3 | +30% grav jump range and −30% fuel cost | Make 30 grav jumps |
| 4 | −50% jump drive fuel cost | Final rank |
Because the challenge is simply making grav jumps, Astrodynamics is one of the quickest skills to max. Normal story travel usually gets you through the challenges without grinding.
Is Astrodynamics Worth It?
Yes, if you travel a lot. Otherwise it is optional. Rank 1 and rank 3 add range, while ranks 2 and 4 mostly reduce fuel cost. A good grav drive makes a bigger difference than the skill, so treat Astrodynamics as a bonus on top of a well-built ship, not a replacement for one.
It also counts as a Science point toward that tree’s tier gates (4 points unlocks the next tier). That makes it a useful “key” skill for Science builds heading to Surveying, Scanning or Outpost Engineering. See our build strategy guide for how tier gates work.
How to Increase Grav Jump Range (Beyond the Skill)
- Upgrade your grav drive. Jump range depends on the drive’s grav jump thrust compared with your ship’s total mass. Higher-class drives from ship technicians are the biggest single upgrade.
- Cut ship mass. Heavy cargo holds, extra habs and armour reduce range. Remove modules you do not use.
- Add fuel tanks. Your maximum jump is limited by fuel capacity as well as drive thrust, so a strong drive still needs enough fuel.
- Take Starship Design. This Tech skill unlocks better ship modules, including higher-tier grav drives.
- Use X-Tech ship optimization. Since the Free Lanes update, the optimization terminal can push ship stats further. See our X-Tech guide.
Plan a long-range explorer ship in our Starfield Ship Builder, or pick a proven hull from the ship tier list.
Free Lanes Cruise Mode vs Grav Jumping
The April 2026 Free Lanes update added a cruise mode for travelling within a star system without loading screens. Grav jumps are still how you move between systems, so Astrodynamics stays relevant. Read more in our Free Lanes guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Astrodynamics do in Starfield?
It increases grav jump range (up to the rank 3 bonus) and reduces jump drive fuel cost across its four ranks.
How do you level Astrodynamics fast?
Just make grav jumps: 5, 15 and 30 jumps unlock ranks 2, 3 and 4. Short hops between nearby systems count, so you can finish the challenges quickly.
Which background starts with Astrodynamics?
Explorer and Professor both include Astrodynamics as a starting skill.
What increases jump range most?
A better grav drive and a lighter ship. The skill adds a percentage on top, so it gains the most on an already efficient ship.
