Starfield Best Skills 2026: Skill Tree Guide & What to Unlock First

The definitive Starfield skills guide for 2026. Discover the best skills to unlock first, top builds for the Free Lanes update and Terran Armada DLC, and which skill trees to prioritise for your playstyle.

Starfield has 82 skills spread across five trees, and early skill points can make or break your first 20 hours. This guide explains how the skill system works, which skills to unlock first, the best picks in each tree, and how to plan skills for combat, stealth, ships and outposts. Updated October 2026.

Note: we have rewritten this guide and merged in our old Skills page. Earlier versions contained skill effects and DLC details that were not accurate.

How Skills Work

  • There are five skill trees: Physical, Social, Combat, Science and Tech. Each tree has four tiers.
  • You earn one skill point per level. Spending points in a tree unlocks its higher tiers.
  • Each skill has four ranks. To unlock the next rank, you first complete that skill’s challenge, such as getting kills with a weapon type or succeeding at persuasion checks, and then spend a point.
  • Your skills, ranks and challenge progress all carry over into New Game Plus.
