Starfield Best Weapons Guide 2026 – Top Guns, Legendary Weapons & Where to Find Them
Starfield has over 100 unique weapons across six categories — and knowing which ones are worth farming versus which you can safely sell makes a huge difference in your combat effectiveness. This guide covers the absolute best weapons in 2026, how to get them, and how to mod them for maximum performance in Patch 1.16.236.
Weapon Categories in Starfield
Starfield weapons fall into six main categories, each with its own certification skill in the Combat tree:
- Particle Beams — Highest sustained DPS in the game. Buffed +15% in Patch 1.16.236. Best for endgame and NG+. Bypass most enemy armor types.
- Rifles — Versatile, reliable, good ammo economy. Best all-around category for new players and all-rounder builds.
- Pistols — Excellent with Stealth builds. One-shot potential with suppressed pistols and Ninja/Concealment skills.
- Shotguns — Devastating at close range. Best for boarding operations and indoor/corridor combat.
- Heavy Weapons — High burst damage but resource-intensive. Best for boss fights and group encounters.
- Melee — Surprisingly viable with the right build. Martial Arts skill makes melee unexpectedly powerful in mid-game.
S-Tier Weapons (Best in Class)
Magshear — Best Particle Beam Assault Rifle
Type: Particle Beam | Category: Rifle | Damage: Very High
Where to Get: Sold by weapon vendors at level 30+, drops from Starborn enemies, crafted with Particle Beam Weapons Rank 4
The Magshear is the premier particle beam assault rifle and the cornerstone of the Particle Sniper build. With Particle Beam Weapons at Rank 4 and the Disassembler perk, it’s a Starborn-killer and endgame boss solution. The 2026 particle beam damage buff pushed this to unquestioned top-tier status. Farm for a legendary version with the “Frenzy” or “Penetrating” affixes.
Beowulf — Best All-Around Rifle
Type: Ballistic | Category: Rifle | Damage: High
Where to Get: Sold by most weapon vendors throughout the game, available from level 5
The Beowulf is Starfield’s most versatile rifle — reliable, widely available, good ammo economy, and highly moddable. The 4.5mm Caseless rounds are the most common ammo type in the game. With a Suppressor, Extended Magazine, and Long Barrel, a legendary Beowulf with the right affixes rivals dedicated builds’ primary weapons. Best starter rifle and excellent throughout the entire game.
Kraken — Best Mid-Game Pistol
Type: Ballistic | Category: Pistol | Damage: High per shot
Where to Get: Sold by weapon vendors from level 15+, Freestar Collective zones
The Kraken is the best pistol in Starfield for Stealth Assassin builds. A suppressed Kraken with the “Peacemaker” mod and a legendary “Assassin’s” affix (bonus damage to healthy targets) enables consistent one-shot kills with Sneak at Rank 4. Extremely credit-efficient to maintain since 7.77mm rounds are cheap and plentiful.
Shotty — Best Early Shotgun
Type: Ballistic | Category: Shotgun | Damage: Extreme at close range
Where to Get: Widely available from vendors and loot, available early game
The Shotty with a Full Choke and Semi-Auto fire mode is the most reliable close-quarters weapon in Starfield. For boarding operations, cave exploration, and any combat that happens in corridors, nothing matches its DPS at 5m range. A legendary “Incendiary” or “Crippling” variant is a mission-winner in boarding scenarios.
Va’ruun Painblade — Best Melee Weapon
Type: Melee | Damage: Very High per strike
Where to Get: Found in Va’ruun locations, drops from Va’ruun enemies, sold by certain black market vendors
The Va’ruun Painblade has the highest base melee DPS in the game. With Martial Arts at Rank 4, it becomes a viable primary weapon — especially in the Shattered Space DLC where Va’ruun enemy encounters are frequent and the blade has faction-appropriate lore. A legendary version with “Frenzy” affix can carry you through most encounters with a pure melee build.
Best Legendary Affixes to Farm For
Legendary weapons drop with random affixes. Here are the most powerful combinations to farm for:
- “Penetrating” + any particle beam — Ignores a percentage of target armor. On particle beams, this multiplies already-high damage to absurd levels against armored Starborn.
- “Frenzy” + Magshear — Chance to frenzied enemies, causing them to attack each other. Excellent for clearing groups without ammo expenditure.
- “Assassin’s” + suppressed pistol — Bonus damage to full-health targets. Combined with Sneak, this enables one-shot kills on virtually any standard enemy.
- “Extended Magazine” + Beowulf — Extended magazine is almost always an upgrade since Beowulf’s base mag size is limited.
- “Lacerate” + melee weapons — Bleed damage over time. On melee weapons with fast attack speed, the bleed stacks up quickly for bonus DPS.
How to Farm Legendary Weapons
The most reliable legendary weapon farming methods in 2026:
- Board and capture ships — EM weapons disable enemy ships for boarding. Enemy ships often have crew with legendary gear. The Devastator ship build (see Ship Builds Guide) is designed specifically for this farming method.
- Ecliptic Mercenaries — These mid-game enemies frequently spawn with legendary weapons. Their compounds (marked by red triangle icons on the scanner) are excellent farming locations.
- Va’ruun Zealots — Higher NG+ runs bring tougher Va’ruun enemies with better gear. Farm the Va’ruun temple locations repeatedly.
- Spacer Boss Compounds — The compound leaders always spawn with at least one legendary item. Find and memorize 5–6 compound locations for efficient farming loops.
Essential Weapon Mods
These mods transform weapons from good to exceptional:
- Suppressor — On any pistol or rifle used for stealth builds. Essential. Allows stealth kills without breaking detection.
- High-Powered Laser Sight — +10% damage when hip-firing. Useful on particle beams since particle beam combat is often aggressive and mobile.
- Extended Magazine — On any weapon where reload speed is a bottleneck. Magshear especially benefits from this.
- Recon Laser Sight — Tags enemies through walls. Invaluable for intelligence gathering before entering a hostile area.
For the character builds that best use these weapons, see the Build Tier List. For ship weapons used in space combat, see the Ship Builds Guide.
