Starfield Update 1.16.236 Patch Notes – Free Lanes Update (April 2026)
Bethesda released Starfield Update 1.16.236 — the Free Lanes update — on April 7, 2026. This is the biggest free update in Starfield’s history.

What Is the Free Lanes Update?
The Starfield Free Lanes update (version 1.16.236) is the largest free content update Bethesda has delivered for Starfield to date. It was released simultaneously with the Terran Armada story DLC and the official Starfield PS5 launch.
The headline feature — Cruise Mode — lets Captains fly between planets and points of interest within a star system in open space for the first time. This makes space travel far more immersive and transforms how players explore the Settled Systems.

New Features: Exploration & Travel
- Free Lanes / Cruise Mode: Players can now use cruise mode to travel in open space or to POI locations between planets inside a star system.
- Database Menu: New menu for better location, resource, and recipe tracking based on your character’s knowledge of the Settled Systems.
- Anchorpoint Station: New POI found in the Algorab system.
- Added new Dungeons, Space Encounters, and Points of Interest throughout the game.
- Adjusted distribution and cooldown timers for points of interest on planets.
New Features: Crafting & Equipment
- X-Tech Crafting: Added X-Tech crafting support to Weapons and Armour, allowing further customisation of legendary effects on equipment.
- Additional Quality Tiers added to weapons and suits.
- Rank 4 Legendary Effects added for weapons and suits.
- Upgrade Modules: Can be installed to improve one attribute of a weapon or suit.
- New Weapon Skins that can be applied to select weapons at a workbench.
New Features: Ships & Outposts
- Ship Optimisation Terminal: A buildable terminal that lets players spend X-Tech to improve several ship attributes.
- Ship Equipment Schematics: New equipment that can be added in the ship builder after discovery.
- Additional 3rd Person Ship Camera distance added.
- Always Show Landing Camera setting added.
- Outpost Quality of Life: Shared Outpost Container, Production Rate information, and more precise placement mode.
New Features: Powers, Items & Characters
- Legendary Enemy Modifiers: Legendary enemies now appear with new modifiers making them more challenging. Adjust settings in Gameplay Options.
- Quantum Entanglement Device: Gives players the ability to transfer some items when choosing to go through the Unity.
- Starborn Powers can now be upgraded with Quantum Essence.
- Quantum Essence can now be added to the Favourites menu for quick access.
- Starborn ships now reward the player with Quantum Essence when destroyed.
- New Vehicle: Moon Jumper.
- New Player House: Château des Étoiles.
- Colony Wars Action Heroes: Provide benefits when found; display cases added as buildable objects.
- New Crew Member: Muria Siarkiewicz is now available to join your crew.
- Added additional Photo Mode poses for the Rev-8.
- Terran Armada DLC is now available.
General Fixes
- Steam: Disabled DLC will no longer re-install when launching the game.
- General crash and stability fixes.
Gameplay Fixes
- Improved loot found in containers with Expert and Master level locks.
- Reactive Equipment: Resolved an issue with sound effects for the Reactive legendary effect.
- Fixed an issue that could cause NPCs to calculate weapon damage inconsistently.
- Fixed CombaTech magazine accuracy bonuses not applying consistently.
- Players can now jump while reloading the XM-2311, Old Earth Pistol, and Livingstone’s Pistol.
- Bounty targets in cities should now be properly interactable.
- Resolved an issue that could cause non-combat background music to stop playing.
- Photo Mode: Fixed an issue when entering Photo Mode while also entering an interior.
- Photo Mode: Fixed an issue causing the player’s right foot to display awkwardly.
Quest Fixes
- Friends Like These: Players should now be able to return the Terrormorph data at quest end.
- Guilty Parties: Fixed an issue where this quest could fail to start after completing “Background Checks”.
- Missed Beyond Measure: Fixed an issue that could lock the player with an invalid companion.
- One Giant Leap: The player’s helmet should now be visible.
- Refurbished Goods: All required quest weapons should now be findable; turning in the quest no longer removes incorrect items.
- The Hammer Falls: Fixed an issue preventing players from receiving the Star Eagle ship upon completion.
- Two Tales, Two Cities: Fixed a control-lock issue when choosing to arrest Tahir.
Location Fixes
- Resolved an issue causing some beds in Akila City to not grant the Rested Bonus.
- Characters should now correctly sit in chairs in the Explorer’s Refuge.
UI Improvements
- Improved an issue making Weapons Workbenches difficult to place in houses or ships.
- Added visual improvements to the Ship Repair UI.
- Ship Builder: Fixed an issue preventing unique or stolen ships from being renamed.
- Ship Builder: Resolved a duplicate ship model persisting on the landing pad after modification.
- Ship Builder: Hopetech All-In-One Berth 2×2 furnished version is now accessible.

- Players can now use the Escape key to exit renaming an item in a workbench (PC).
- Fixed a typo in the Scan Jammer’s description.

Creations (Mods)
- A Perfect Recipe: Resolved an issue preventing the Ashta from spawning.
- Updated the description for Plushie Andreja.

- The “Plushie Case – Mount” can now be placed closer to the “Plushie Case – Stackable” variant.
- Allied Winter Camo Skins will now show up on the Creation menu when installed.
