Starfield Cruise Mode Guide 2026: How It Works and What Free Lanes Added

Cruise Mode arrived with the Free Lanes update (version 1.16.236, April 7, 2026) and changed how you travel inside a star system. Instead of fast travelling from planet to planet, you can now fly there in real time. This guide explains how Cruise Mode works, what you can do while cruising, and the related ship features that came with it. Updated October 2026.
Note: we have rewritten this guide. An earlier version described controls, skills, items and mechanics that are not in the game.
What Is Cruise Mode?
Cruise Mode lets you travel through open space to planets and points of interest within your current star system. Your ship flies itself, so you can enjoy the view or get up and walk around your ship, talk to your crew or use your workbenches on the way.
Why Use It Instead of Fast Travel?
- Encounters along the way. Free Lanes added new space encounters and points of interest, and you can run into events while cruising between planets.
- Time to manage your ship. Craft, sort cargo or talk to companions while you travel.
- Immersion. Watching a planet grow in your cockpit window is a big part of the appeal.
Fast travel still works, so use Cruise Mode when you want to explore and fast travel when you just need to get somewhere.
How to Use Cruise Mode
- Get into space within the star system you want to explore.
- Select a planet, moon or point of interest in that system as your destination.
- Engage Cruise Mode. Your ship flies toward the destination on its own.
- Leave the pilot’s seat if you like, and return to it when you arrive or an encounter interrupts the trip.
Button prompts vary by platform and keybinding, so follow the on-screen prompt in your cockpit.
Other Ship Features Added in Free Lanes
- Ship Optimization Terminal – a buildable terminal where you spend X-Tech to improve several ship attributes. See our X-Tech guide.
- Ship Equipment Schematics – new equipment you can add in the ship builder once discovered.
- Camera options – an extra third-person ship camera distance and an “Always Show Landing Camera” setting.
- New crew – Muria Siarkiewicz can now join your crew.
For the full list of changes, see the 1.16.236 patch notes and our Free Lanes and Terran Armada overview.
Tips
- Set up a crafting station or two on your ship so travel time doubles as crafting time. See our ship builds guide.
- Keep your shields and weapons ready: some encounters turn hostile.
- If you are hunting for a specific point of interest, cruising lets you spot things you would miss by fast travelling.
